Simone and I went to France in June because she needed to renew her US tourist visa. Hardly anything to complain about, that’s for sure, but some warmer weather would have been nice. I guess you can’t have everything.

Here are some black and white photos we took in Paris. Simone’s mum and sister came to see us is Paris, so they’re also in a few of the photos.

Here are a few more spring photos from Boston. It was cold and jacket weather when we first arrived. All the trees were naked trees and the city’s colour palette was a wash of brown hues. With the arrival of summer, it’s completely transformed.

I've been too busy to update this blog recently, so now I'm playing catch-up. To explain a bit: I went to New Zealand in late November for a conference, then stayed on until after Christmas. After getting back to Copenhagen, I had a couple of weekends away visiting friends: one in London, and another in Belgium (Leuven, Antwerp, and Brussels).

Now Simone and I are in Boston, where we'll be until the autumn, because I have a research stay at a university here. Phew... that's it. More photos soon.

(Jeg har haft for travlt til at opdatere bloggen på det seneste, så nu leger jeg 'catch-up'. For at forklare lidt: jeg rejste til New Zealand i november på grund af en konference, og så blev jeg der indtil jul. Efter jeg var tilbage i København, var jeg et par weekender væk for at besøge venner: en i London, og en i Belgien (Leuven, Antwerp, og Bruxelles.

Here are a few photos from the last beach at Costa da Caparica. It's a small fishing village, with a few cafes and roadside stalls. Simone and I cycled here together on rented bikes, and were wet with sweat when we arrived.

Just to the south of Lisbon is Costa da Caparica, a summer holiday destination for what seemed to be mostly tourists from Portugal. We spent a week here, eating pastries and drinking espresso from the same cafe every morning.

There is a stark contrast between town and country in Poland. While the cities were relatively modern developments with remnants of classical architecture, the rural villages often looked like nothing much had changed in fifty years.

The two photos below are of Ole and Iwona’s village in western Poland, which lies about 35 kilometres (22 miles) from the German border.

A few weeks ago Simone and I took a trip to Poland with her brother Nicholas and his girlfriend Kristina. We stayed with Simone’s ex-stepfather Ole and his wife Ivona, who live on an old estate not too far from Szczecin.

These photos are from their property, which used to be part of Germany. The last photo is of Simone and Nicholas.

I'd wanted to visit Poland since learning about its changing borders in high-school history classes. Much of what I saw conformed to my expectations: grey skies, communist architecture and post-communist consumer culture.

Living in Scandinavia would be much more difficult if it wasn't so close to the warmer parts of Europe.

I’m sitting at a small desk in a whitewashed room at a converted Catholic monastery in Nord Sjælland, attending a conference for Scandinavian PhD students. There's a crucifix in the bottom of my small chest of draws accompanied by a trilingual Gideons' bible. Mum would be pleased.

The conference centre is surrounded by gardens and woods still transitioning into a spring bloom, but I have photos of London from March, when spring hadn’t quite arrived.

Sometimes if I am feeling lazy I take the metro to work. It's actually so easy that it almost makes me feel guilty: there are stations close to my home and my office, and a direct line that takes me from one to the other in about 15 minutes. LCD Soundsystem is one of the few bands that I still get really excited about, so I was stoked to find that their new album This Is Happening is streaming on their website now.

It sounds like they tried to make a YACHT record, but just did it way better than YACHT could have done.

As a New Zealander, I see the decision to live in Europe as a question of trade-offs, where I have to decide which is more important to me: culture or nature. At the moment I should be getting my fill of culture, and so am a bit disappointed with myself for having basically ignored Copenhagen's many galleries during our long, cold winter. Because despite its architectural beauty, Copenhagen can get pretty depressing during the months when the days are short.

But I've begun to rectify things: we've been to exhibitions over the last two weekends. Tomorrow Simone and I are going to Louisiana; my favourite gallery in the world. The photos below are from the Statens Mueseum for Kunst.

While the GFC has managed to slow down construction projects in Copenhagen, it hasn't halted them completely. The first two shots below are of a project that has been in the works for a while now on the island of Amager, while the last is of an apartment building just 100 metres away. I tend to prefer the city's older buildings to its new ones, so I'll just have to see whether this project conforms to my expectations.

Amager Fælled is a large conservation area on the island of Amager, in Copenhagen. During winter, when the light is low, it's easy to get lost in the network of paths that criss-cross the park. Luckily, I was accompanied by a Dane on this particular trip, one who has experience navigating across flat landscapes.

All of these photos were taken along Gothersgade, one of the few arteries that feed traffic from central Copenhagen to the outer boroughs. If you click on the link above, you'll see that the street looks a little different in winter and in summer.

It was a late Sunday afternoon when I took the photos, and they give a hint of the twilight that was quickly approaching.

Here are a few more from Sunday's walk. I love how a heavy snow fall transforms a city. There are fewer cars on the road and everything is a bit more calm.

I've posted photos from Knippelsbro (truncheon's bridge) before and I just couldn't resist taking another.

Simone and I also finally visited Sweet Treat, the tiny cafe that is usually too full to find a seat inside of. Maybe the regulars were scared off by all the snow.

The novelty of regular snow falls has nearly worn off. I keep thinking: "If only I could make the most of it!" Next winter I'll buy some cross-country skis, but for now Sunday walks with cameras will have to do.

We've been walking around Christianshavn every weekend for a while now, aiming to have coffee at a little cafe that's always full. Maybe we'll finally get to go there this weekend.

If you're in the area on a Friday or Saturday night and don't mind smokey places, I can recommend Eiffel Bar. It has a great 70s decor and the beers are 14-17 kroner, which is about half price for Copenhagen.

E-readers and iPads are great and everything, but wouldn't it be awesome if one of these things allowed you to highlight sections of books/articles and then automatically collated those highlighted sections in a 'notes' document with references, etc.?

Until there is an application to perform that task, I'll stick to my books and laptop.

In an effort to get some fresh midday air, Simone and I went for a lunchtime walk in Frederiksberg Have last week. The second photo is of a suttetræ, where children hang their pacifiers when they stop using them.

Here are a couple of photos of some large graffiti pieces that I ride by every morning on my way to work. Graffiti isn't too common in Copenhagen, but it is generally done pretty well in the places you see it. The bottom two photos are from an abandoned building in Amager.

This is my way of saying thanks to Allison for linking to me, because I know that she really likes street art.

The problem with using film cameras is the delay between taking and seeing. Patience is virtue, right?

So here's something for the meantime, until I get my films back from being processed or am able to take photos when the sun is out. I found it here.

I also had to laugh when I saw this today. We now have Street View in Denmark.

Simone and I saw the xx at Vega last Friday with a bunch of friends. And... wow! They were good - much, much better than expected. And much more confident than they were in the live videos I've seen of them.

This winter in Copenhagen has been extraordinarily cold. We've had snow on the ground since around the New Year and icy harbours for over a week. I'm regularly told that this weather isn't typical for Denmark and that it's usually more mild, but this is exactly how I imagined winter would be in Scandinavia.

Thankfully the colder temperatures prevent clouds from forming, so we've had lots of sunny days. Here are a few photos from last Friday, when I was cycling through town around lunch time.
